Musnad Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf

Imam Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Burthi

مسند عبدالرحمٰن بن عوف

Musnad Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf

This is a specialised musnad (a hadith collection organised by Companion) dedicated entirely to the narrations of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf (r.a.) (ca. 580–652 CE), one of the ten Companions promised Paradise (al-'Asharah al-Mubashsharah) and one of the wealthiest among them.

1. The Compiler

The collection was compiled by Imam Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa al-Burthi (d. ~286 AH / ~899 CE), a Khurasani hadith scholar and student of major third-century masters. The Burthi nisba relates to Burth, a region in Khurasan.

2. The Narrator: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf

  • One of the earliest converts to Islam, accepted the faith before the Prophet ﷺ entered Dar al-Arqam.
  • A senior member of the Shura council and a central figure in transmitting prophetic knowledge from the earliest generation.
  • Despite his enormous wealth (he donated heavily to every major Islamic campaign), he lived with characteristic Companion piety.

3. Scope

The musnad contains 52 hadiths across 14 sub-sections (Abwab) within a single Book — historically significant as a primary source for this Companion's narrations, compiled before larger musnad works like that of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal absorbed and cross-referenced similar material.
